Model Identification
Model/Catalog Number Breakdown
1949 - 1963 (Year and Month Only)
Most often during this period, you can find a stamp within the inner case back that will give you either the last two digits of the year, the full year, or a month and year of manufacturing. In some cases, especially if the watch has previously been serviced or parts replaced, this ink stamp may have rubbed off. Once you find the year, go to the Model Reference section of this site for more information on models within that year.
1959 - 1967 (Great Britain - Year and Month Only)
1963 - 1970
On each watch produced since 1963, Timex has imprinted the dial with a special code number for ease in model identification. This code number is printed on the face of the dial and is not normally visible until the movement is uncased. This code number will tell you the Timex sales catalog number, the movement number and the year of manufacture.
Please note: If you cannot see the number, then it is likely COMPLETELY HIdden under the crystal and bezel. You will have to remove the case to see it.
Watches produced between 1963 and 1970 are coded as shown below:
The last two digits designate the year of manufacture (refer to illustration. In this case, the last two digits are 70, therefore the watch was produced in 1970).
The two digits immediately preceding the year of manufacture designate the movement number (refer to the illustration. In this case, these two digits are 25, therefore, the movement number is Model 25)
The first four digits are read as shown and designate the Timex sales catalog number with the last digit omitted. The last digit of the catalog number is omitted because it only designates the strap or band use. (Refer to illustration - the sales catalog number could be 23561 or 23562, the 1 or 2 denoting the different strap or band type.
1971 - 1973
Watches produced between 1971 and 1973 are coded as shown below:
The last two digits designate the year of manufacture (refer to illustration. In this case, the last two digits are 73, therefore the watch was produced in 1973).
The two digits immediately preceding the year of manufacture designate the movement number (refer to illustration. In this case, these two digits are 25, therefore, the movement number is Model 25)
The first five digits are read as shown and designate the Timex sales catalog number with the last digit omitted. The last digit of the catalog number is omitted because it only designates the strap or band used. (Refer to illustration - the sales catalog number 235601 or 235602, the 1 or 2 denoting the different strap or band type.
1974 - 1984
Watches produced between 1974 and 1984 are coded as shown below:
The last two digits designate the year of manufacture (refer to illustration. In this case, the last two digits are 74, therefore the watch was produced in 1974).
The three digits immediately preceding the year of manufacture designate the movement number (refer to illustration. In this case, these two digits are 025, therefore, the movement number is Model 25.) This was done as movement model number with three digits came into the Timex line up.
The first five digits are read as shown and designate the Timex sales catalog number with the last digit omitted. The last digit of the catalog number is omitted because it only designates the strap or band used. (Refer to illustration - the sales catalog number 235501 or 235602, the 1 or 2 denoting the different strap or band type.
1985 - Present (Year and Month Only)
This method is used to identify the year and month of production only. The code can be found stamped on the case back of the watch.
